چکیده

RX J0720.4−3125 is the third brightest neutron star in the soft X-ray sky and has been a source of mystery since its discovery, as its long 8-s period separates it from the population of typical radio pulsars. Three models were proposed for this source: a neutron star accreting from the interstellar medium, an off-beam radio pulsar, or an old, cooling magnetar. Using data from Chandra, ROSAT, and BeppoSAX we are able to place an upper limit to the period derivative, | ˙ P | < 3.6 × 10 −13 s s −1 (3-σ). While our upper limit on ˙ P allows for the accretion model, this model is increasingly untenable for another similar but better studied neutron star, RX J1856.5−3754, and we therefore consider the accretion model unlikely for RX J0720.4−3125. We constrain the initial magnetic field of RX J0720.4−3125 to be 10 14 G based on cooling models, suggesting that it is not and never was a magnetar, but is instead middle-aged neutron star. We propose that it is either a long-period high-magnetic field pulsar with ˙ P ∼ 10 −13 s s −1 similar to PSR J1814−1744, or a neutron star born with an initial period of ≈ 8.3 s and ˙ P ∼ 10 −15 s s −1. The proximity of RX J0720.4−3125 is strongly suggestive of a large population of such objects; if so, radio pulsar surveys must have missed many of these sources.

Spectral and temporal variations of the isolated neutron star RX J0720.4−3125: new XMM-Newton observations

Context. In the past, the isolated, radio-quiet neutron star RX J0720.4−3125 showed variations in its spectral parameters (apparent radius, temperature of the emitting area and equivalent width of the absorption feature) seen in the X-ray spectra, not only during the spin period of 8.39 s, but also over time scales of years. New X-ray observations of RX J0720.4−3125 with XMM-Newton extend the c...

A Coherent Timing Solution for the Nearby Isolated Neutron Star Rx J0720.4−3125

We present the results of a dedicated effort to measure the spin-down rate of the nearby isolated neutron star RX J0720.4−3125. Comparing arrival times of the 8.39-sec pulsations for data from Chandra we derive an unambiguous timing solution for RX J0720.4−3125 that is accurate to < 0.1 cycles over > 5 years. Adding data from XMM and ROSAT, the final solution yields Ṗ = (6.98 ± 0.02) × 10 s s; ...

Optical Observations of the Isolated Neutron Star RX J0720.4−3125

RX J0720.4−3125 is an unidentified bright soft X-ray source which shows pulsations at a 8.39 s period and has a thermal spectrum. We present deep B and R band images of its X-ray localization. We find one possible counterpart in the X-ray error box, with magnitudes B = 26.6±0.2 and R = 26.9±0.3. The very high X-ray to optical flux ratio confirms that this object is an isolated neutron star. We ...

The Nearby Neutron Star Rx J0720.4−3125 from Radio to X-rays

We present radio, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray observations of the isolated, thermally-emitting neutron star RX J0720.4−3125 using the Parkes radio telescope, the Very Large Array, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. From these data we show that the optical/UV spectrum of RX J0720.4−3125 is not well fit by a Rayleigh-Jeans tail as previously thought, but is instead...
